Minister for Enterprise Simon Coveney is due to meet union reps from Tara Mines this afternoon to try and agree a resolution about the future of workers.
The company owners, Boliden announced they were temporarily closing the facility because of high running costs, meaning 650 workers would be laid off for an indefinite period.
Over 3,000 people are employed at the mines. John Regan SIPTU spokesperson says action is needed now to protect them. "There's a lot of talk about wanting to do something, but the Government has not showed anything in that regard," he explained.
"The Government has met with the company several times as well, but it appears there is great willingness verbally but not in action and that is disappointing."
