Sinn Féin TD for Cavan-Monaghan Matt Carthy has called on the government to take action against voluntary school contributions that are placing unfair pressure on families' finances.
He was speaking ahead of Sinn Féin bringing forward a new Bill that aims to regulate voluntary school contributions earlier this week.
Deputy Carthy said the Bill would place an obligation on schools to make clear to families that these contributions are voluntary.
It will also ensure, he added, that no child is stigmatised or denied opportunities because their parents are not in a position to make a contribution.
