Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald, was in Monaghan Town today on a number of engagements including a visit to the Crocus Cancer Support Centre.
Earlier this year, Deputy McDonald's husband, Martin Lanigan, was diagnosed with bowel cancer but, is now making a recovery. The couple and their children were abroad on holiday when Mr Lannigan became suddenly very ill and later received a cancer diagnosis.
Speaking to Northern Sound earlier, the wife and mother said her family is not unique and that she is on a journey many other families like hers have had to travel: "I'm really looking forward to going down to see Máirtín and Crocus," Deputy McDonald told Northern Sound, "It's very personal obviously to me and my own family but, we're always very conscious that this journey, this cancer journey, is one that so many families, every other family, has been on and, thankfully now, thank God, things are looking good for my husband and we're so grateful for that. I'm so glad they asked me to stop by because it's not political, it's very personal to me."
