All 18 seats are filled in the three municipal districts of Monaghan County Council. It was a weekend of highs and lows for many as voting got underway at the count centre in Threemilehouse. It was Sinn Fein who bucked the trend in Threemilehouse over the weekend. Sinn Fein candidates in Co Monaghan went against the national trend and won two more seats, ending up with eight councillors.
Three out of the eight elected candidates were newcomers Sinead Flynn (Ballybay-Clones MD), Paul Gibbons (Carrickmacross-Castleblayney MD) and Bronagh McAree (Monaghan MD). It was Fianna Fail's Seamus Coyle who topped the poll in the Ballybay-Clones MD, while his party colleague PJ O'Hanlon topped the poll in the Carrickmacross-Castleblayney MD. Raymond Aughey secured his seat on Monaghan County Council following his re-election, however it was a disappointing weekend for Fianna Fáil's Aoife McCooey, outgoing Cathaoirleach of the Carrickmacross-Castleblayney MD who lost her seat.
Fine Gael will be happy with their performance, with a total of six councillors elected. Fine Gael's Richard Truell was second from topping the poll in Ballybay-Clones while newcomer Pauric Clerkin secured a seat in Monaghan. Councillors Sean Gilliland, Peter Conlon, David Maxwell and Aidan Campbell all secured their seats also. Seamus Treanor who was re-elected will be the only Independent councillor sitting on Monaghan County Council after Independent's Hugh McElvaney retired after fifty years as a councillor and Paudge Connolly lost his seat.
