A Co Cavan woman has been crowned ‘Maths Teacher of the Year’ at a national awards ceremony organised by the Irish Mathematical Trust over the weekend.
Mieghan Duffy is originally from Shercock, but has worked as a maths teacher at Athlone Community College since graduating from NUI Galway in 2014.
Speaking to Northern Sound , the Shercock native said she is "overwhelmed" by the support she has received since winning the national competition.
Mieghan also hopes this recent win will set an example for her students by showing them the importance of "hard work" and always believing in themselves.
"It's been such an amazing experience," revealed Mieghan. "The response I have received from winning has just been phenomenal from students, colleagues and parents.
"I'm so passionate about showing my own students, especially my female students that anything is possible especially when you put in a bit of hard work. For them to see me winning this award, it makes them all feel part of it and it has gave everyone a boost."
