The number of crimes reported in Co Cavan has fallen so far this year, but there has been a sharp increase in the number of reported sexual offences.
While Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern says "crime in general is down", he called on people to be alert as we enter "the busy Christmas period".
At this afternoon's Joint Policing Committee Meeting, the number of crimes reported in the county in the year to date were presented to members.
While there was a 33% decrease in the number of burglaries and robberies this year to date, when compared to last year, there was a 63% increase in sexual offences.
Chief Superintendent McGovern said the sharp increase could be due to people feeling safer in coming forward to the protective services unit.
Elsewhere, there was a 24% decrease in drug driving and an 8% decrease in drink driving.
