Mullagh Councillor Shane P O’Reilly’s resignation from Fianna Fáil has been described as “a great loss to the party”.
He cited "irreconcilable differences with national party leadership" for his decision, in a statement to Northern Sound News last night.
Councillor O’Reilly said Fianna Fáil’s “direction is not representative of” his aims, beliefs and ideals.
He’s been critical of the party leadership and executive and issued a strong condemnation in an interview with Northern Sound at this year’s general election count.
He says he will continue to sit on Cavan County Council as an Independent Councillor.
His resignation has been greeted with disappointment by Fianna Fáil locally.
Blacklion Councillor John Paul Feeley, who’s the party whip on the Council, said Councillor O’Reilly would be a loss to the party.
But in a statement issued last night he too has criticised Fianna Fáil leadership, saying the party has lost two Councillors in 18 months and requests to intervene and investigate issues in the party have gone unanswered.
He concludes by saying he hopes “the Party Leader and Headquarters will reflect on their failure to address these matters".
