A Senior Clinician is to begin work at the Midwifery Led Unit in Cavan General Hospital in the coming months.
Junior Health Minister Frank Feighan says it's hoped the role will support the service after plans for its closure came to light this summer.
The RCSI Hospital Group planned to merge the unit with the consultant led unit in the facility, at odds with health policy which plans more maternity led services across the country.
The move was opposed by unions, the local community and the Health Minister, who ordered a report into the plans from the National Women and Infant Health Programme in the HSE.
However, reviews within the RCSI Group have delayed the report which is now almost five months past the original due date set by the Minister.
Minister Feighan told the Dáil the Government remains committed to rollout of midwife led services.
