Senator Joe O'Reilly has confirmed to Northern Sound that he has put his name forward in the upcoming Fine Gael convention.
The Co Cavan man has been a Senator since 2016 and prior to that he was a TD for Cavan and Monaghan from 2011 to 2016. Senator O'Reilly was first elected to Cavan County Council in 1985 and was elected in 1999 and 2004 to the Bailieboro local electoral area.
The Cootehill native was also a former teacher and also made a bid to become a MEP in 2009. It comes after that shock announcement by Minister Heather Humphreys over the weekend that she won't contest the upcoming General Election.
Fine Gael are holding their convention for Cavan and Monaghan this Friday in the Kilmore Hotel at 8pm. Cllr TP O'Reilly is set to run in the upcoming election for Cavan, while Cllr David Maxwell has already confirmed his intentions to contest the convention tomorrow night. Senator Joe O'Reilly says it's not clear as of yet if they will have a two or three candidate strategy but he believes it will be a three candidate strategy.
