The Save our Schools campaign says it hopes news the ETB does not plan to progress with the merger of St Bricin’s College in Belturbet and St Mogue’s in Bawnboy is “genuine intent”.
ETB CEO John Kearney this week said the proposal is not progressing at the moment but the plans are not shelved.
News of the planned amalgamation of the two west Cavan schools was met with condemnation from some in the local community after it was first announced late 2018.
CMETB said the merger would be the best use of resources and see the provision of a new school in Ballyconnell.
It defended the move saying it was the best option for students.
However, the Save our Schools committee was staunchly opposed to the closure of the two schools with some defending the role of smaller schools.
In a statement issued to Northern Sound News after this week’s ETB meeting the committee said it hopes news the plans aren’t progressing is “genuine intent”.
But the group says as it has “had no communication” from the Board and as the decision was not disclosed to it or the community it is “not optimistic”.
