Mullagh Fair Day is back and this time for its 30th year. The day is a re-enactment of the traditional Irish fair day and as such visitors will see horse trading and cattle dealing, pigs on the green and cattle on the street. And don't be surprised to see a fake dispute over price between traders as serious business is sealed with a spit on the hand.
This year, will be the first Irish Rural Olympics which, Mullagh man and local councillor Shane P. O'Reilly says is being held "in defiance of Eamon Ryan". He said the international games will see participants from Brazil, Moynalty and Maghera milk cows, throw a wellie, foot turf and pick spuds for the fee of a fiver.
Councillor O'Reilly said there's is something at Mullagh Fair Day for everyone in the family plus a lot of free events: "There's a lot of free stuff as well and that's an important point because Mam and Dad need to have a day out, too," Shane P. O'Reilly told Northern Sound, "and things have just got a wee bit tight so with the way things are at the moment the more stuff we put on for free the better so that people don't go away feeling that they were cleaned completely. We have to say about our sponsors," he added, "businesses are getting it tough as well and they just never let us down. This is the biggest fundraising event of the parish."
