A Romanian national jailed for stabbing his housemate in Cavan in 2019 has been ordered to leave Ireland when he's released.

The Court heard a fight broke out over loud music, and who owned the spoons that were being used in the kitchen.

31 year old Nicusor Piricieanu had been living at College Street Cavan since he moved to Ireland approximately 5 weeks before the incident.

He'd come to Ireland through an agency to work in a local meat plant and had been sharing the property, provided by the factory, with other employees.

On August 25th 2019, Gardaí were called to the property and found a Spanish man in the doorway displaying a number of stab wounds.

Piricieanu was inside and had minor wounds.

Through language barriers, Gardaí established that an argument broke out between the two over loud music being played in the shared kitchen, and later that the injured party was accused of using spoons that belonged to Piricieanu.

He proceeded to pick up a peeling knife and stab his housemate a number of times in the shoulder, thigh and hand.

Medical examinations determined he lost partial sensation in his hand, which was used to block more serious injuries to other parts of the body.

Defence Counsel Breffni Gordon outlined the man's remorse and how he intends to return to Romania to marry a long-term partner - adding that he feels he's let down his entire family.

Judge John Aylmer said if it wasn't for self defence they could have been dealing with a fatality, but took into account the man's previous good record and that it was seemingly fueled by excessive alcohol.

He was sentenced to four years in prison for Section 4 Assault, backdated to when he entered custody last August with the final 18 months suspended.

Piricieanu was also told that upon release, he'll have eight weeks to leave Ireland and not return for at least 10 years.
