A major road safety operation is in place for the Bank Holiday weekend, with checkpoints in place.
So far, 145 people have died in crashes, and bank holidays tend to be the most dangerous time to use the roads.
Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern who is the head of the Cavan/Monaghan/Louth Garda Division says there has been an increase of drug use when taking to the roads along with alcohol consumption.
He says speed in the region is playing a major part when it comes to leaving our road network unsafe especially on a bank holiday weekend.
His comments come as two new average speed cameras went live on Friday on the N5 in Mayo and the N3 in Cavan.
