In the lead up to the May bank holiday weekend, the RNLI has issued a water safety appeal, asking people to take some basic steps to "stay safe."
Last month, a lone kayaker from Monaghan got into difficulty off Clogherhead in county Louth when his kayak capsized in a strong current.
While the local man was saved by members of the Clougheard RNLI, Barry Sharkey who attended the scene that day says people must be careful when entering the water, particularly over the bank holiday weekend.
The RNLI mechanic and crew member added that there are a number of ways to keep safe, and reduce the risk of accidents occurring.
