A Carrickmacross councillor has said there has been an increase in the number of discarded aerosol cans collected with the area's rubbish. Councillor Colm Carthy says he hope the rise in the number of empty cans is not indicative of a more serious problem of young people using aerosols as a way to get 'high'
Outdoor staff working in the Carrickmacross area reported the increase in the number of the cans to Councillor Carthy. The staff have noticed the rising numbers in the bins and discarded in local streets. Councillor Carthy told Northern Sound he wanted to make young people and parents aware of the potential dangers.
"I would certainly issue the warning that these things don't come without health warnings," Councillor Carthy said, "Obviously, teenagers use deodorants, they use aerosols like hairspray when they're going out and that's acceptable. I'm, sure the levels of toxicity since the 80s has reduced but if you're using it to ingest it directly into your system, there are further repercussions there."
