A revised planning application for a major expansion of Cavan General Hospital has been submitted.
The new application seeks to increase inpatient bed numbers from 14 up to 54. This is alongside a new Emergency Department, Endoscopy Unit and three floors of in-patient bed accommodation. Yesterday, Cavan General suffered from severe overcrowding, with 25 patients waiting on trolleys in the Emergency Department Local TD Brendan Smith hopes construction on the project will begin by the middle of next year
"By the middle of the year, I would expect that building work will be underway. So, hopefully that will ensure there will be no delays. The funding is in place by the Minister for Health and the HSE capital programme".
