Politicians are anxiously awaiting the review of electoral constituencies which will be announced this week. The Dáil may have as many as 21 new TDs as a result of the redraw, which is one of the most significant in history.
Almost all constituencies are in breach of the constitution as they have more than 30 thousand citizens for every TD above the legal limit. Geography lecturer at Maynooth University, Adrian Kavanagh says lots of constituencies are going to change. "Whatever they decide this time is probably going to set precedent for future reports in any case," he added.
"They have decisions to make particularly with current five-seat constituencies like Carlow-Kilkenny; Laois-Offaly; Wexford; Donegal; and Tipperary. So, probably the decisions they make this time round will more or less determine the shape of those constituencies for the next few reviews."
