A retired Cavan Garda Superintendent was jailed yesterday for possession of over a quarter of a million euro worth of cannabis.
62-year-old John Murphy served as a Garda Superintendent in 2005 amassed €855,000 in debt after retiring from the force, hid the drugs in his walk-in wardrobe, coal bunker and car.
After decades of unblemished public service, John Murphy retired from a Garda Síochána in 2010 and in the years that followed, he built up huge amounts of debt through what were described as bad and sometimes unlucky business decisions.
Gardai acting on confidential information searched his home in County Meath on the 29th of September last year and recovered 13 kilos of cannabis, worth €259,000.
Judge Nolan accepted that a prison sentence is more difficult for former gardai but he told Murphy that he should have known better before jailing him for 6.5 years.
