Further restrictions on certain breeds of dog could put serious pressure on dog shelters.
That's the view of Tina Boyle of the Cavan branch of the ISPCA.
In recent days, the DSPCA reported a 120 percent increase in the number of teenage dogs, aged between 6 to 24 months, being put up for adoption. The Dublin based service also reported a 30 percent overall increase in surrenders. Local Minister Heather Humphries also recently introduced a ban on the XL Bully dogs, and introduced restrictions on current owners of the dogs. Tina Boyle from the Cavan SPCA, says that fears of further restrictions on other breeds could lead to more people surrendering their dogs to shelters. She added that it could also lead to more dogs having to be put down.
"They either become institutionalized in rescues because they can't be rehomed. If they're banned, they can't be rehomed anywhere, or if they're institutionalized dogs they stay in rescue, or they're put to sleep and that'll be the end result for those kind of dogs"
