Residents in the Northern Sound region are being urged to secure their homes on every occasion they leave, regardless of how long they will be away.
Sergeant Mick Duffy, Crime Prevention Officer at Monaghan Garda Station, says almost half of burglaries are through an open door or window.
Sergeant Duffy added that burglars seek out "tell-tale" signs that homes are unoccupied and residents leave a light on to give the impression that the home is occupied.
