The Minister for Agriculture says the Government will consider reliefs to fuel prices around the border region in the Budget.
It comes as previous cuts to excise duty on fuel, which were introduced after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, were restored. The price of a litre of petrol rose by four cent a litre while diesel rose by three cent a litre, and green diesel by one and a half cent a litre. This has caused concerns with petrol station operators in the border region, who fear that more people will now travel north of the border to get their fuel.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue, says this is an issue the Government will be looking into.
"That's something I'll certainly be bringing to the table in the context of this Budget. We have to look at the cost that's there for families, the cost that's there for businesses. We also have to be very aware of that cross border aspect and making sure that we're not tipping the scale whereby businesses go away from filling stations across the border. So that's something I'll certainly be bringing to the Cabinet table. Overall it's something that the Government is going to have front and centre".
