A regional TD believes there are questions of how much the proposed tolls increase would go towards the already generous profits of private motorway companies as opposed to carrying out essential maintenance works.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Sinn Fein spokesperson on transport, Darren O'Rourke said while he understands revenue is needed to keep roads maintained, he believes the issue itself has been "completely mismanaged."
According to Deputy O'Rourke, the recommendation should have been dealt with in private and conversations should have been had around looking at other ways to address issues related to the cost of essential maintenance of Ireland's motorway network.
He added that central government has not been investing significantly in the maintenance of both national and local roads:
Meanwhile, increases to road tolls may be halted.
After meeting his fellow coalition party leaders last night Transport Minister Eamon Ryan's agreed to review the planned price hikes which were due to kick in from the new year.
It's understood the Fianna Fail and Fine Gael leaders believe the inflationary price rises are not a good idea at a time when Government is seeking to ease the financial burden on people during the cost-of-living crisis.
