An appeal against the construction of a telecommunications mast in Cavan has been rejected by An Bórd Pleanála.
Permission for the development was initially refused by Cavan County Planners On Tower Limited applied to Cavan County Council for the construction of a 21 metre high mast complete with antenna and dishes. The proposed location of the site is in Townparks, Ballyhaise. Permission for the development was initially refused by Cavan County Council, citing that the tower would be in close proximity to the natural heritage site of Lough Oughter, going against the characteristics of the area. The mast was also subject to a number of appeals, including from Cavan-Monaghan TD Pauline Tully and Ballyhaise GAA Club. These appeals cited health concerns, the visual impact in relation to St Mary's Church, and no clear justification for a mast in the area. On Tower Limited appealed the refusal to An Bórd Pleanála who ultimately overturned the Council's decision and decided to grant permission for the development. The report stated that the mast would not seriously injure the character of St Mary's Church or any other visual amenities in the area.
The permission is subject to 7 conditions, including that the height of the mast be reduced to 18 metres, and no advertisements be permitted on the structure without planning permission
