The Garda Representation Association are this evening telling the Joint Committee on Justice that a record number of gardaí are due to quit the force.
The Joint Committee for engagement on Policing Matters are meeting in Leinster House today.
Cavan Monaghan TD Deputy Niamh Smyth is a member of the Joint Committee on Justice and she says there is a lot of challenges within An Garda Síochána that need to be worked on. The Committee will hear from the GRA, as well as the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, the Restaurants Association of Ireland, and retired Garda Sergeant Anthony Gallagher.
According to the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, attracting new recruits to join An Garda Siochana is one of the most significant challenges facing the Garda Organisation.
Last year, 107 members of An Garda Síochána resigned from the force and that number is expected to be over 150 for 2023.
Deputy Smyth says if the situation doesn't improve, further resignations will continue to occur.
