The new Age Friendly Ireland initiative will “reach the people who need it most”.
That’s according to Monaghan native and Chief Officer of the project Catherine McGuigan who attended the launch this week for the Cavan/Monaghan division.
Age Friendly Ireland will be rolled out across the country later this year.
But for now it will afford older people in Cavan and Monaghan the opportunity to access information and gain contacts and supports that will enable them to feel safer in their homes and communities.
They will also be assisted by members of An Garda Siochana in their localities.
Catherine, meanwhile, says the initiative will support rural and community engagement.
This, she added, will enhance and enrich the lives of everybody living in rural Ireland.
"Initiatives like this supports rural and community engagement and makes sure that all our volunteers and supports are there to encourage people to participate and to ensure that they are supported, particularly if they are living alone," continued Catherine.
"We saw this during the Covid-19 pandemic when we had the community call initiative.
"We saw people and volunteers giving their time altruistically to those people who needed it.
"The Age Friendly Ireland initiative will be launched in Cavan and Monaghan and rolled out across the country at a later date.
"And it really is a very worthwhile initiative."
