Councillor Raymond Aughey has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of the Monaghan Municipal District.
He takes over from outgoing Cathaoirleach David Maxwell, who nominated Cllr Aughey and was seconded by Sinn Fein's Sean Conlon.
Meanwhile, Cllr Cathy Bennett was named as Leas-Cathaoirleach at this morning's Monaghan MD meeting, taking over from Cllr Seamus Treanor.
Speaking on his new role, Cllr Aughey said he "appreciated" the support from his fellow councillors, stating that he will be "fair" to the job and members.
Cllr Aughey said the role of a councillor is "not an easy job" but regardless of political backgrounds, all seven councillors for the district work to the best of their abilities to support communities.
While he acknowledged the "huge amount" of Cathaoirleach's that once stood before him, Cllr Aughey said he has plans to do things in a slightly different manner, with hopes to bring future MD meetings into local towns and villages in order to hear from the people themselves.
He added that he hopes the next 12 months will be a "smooth" and "good year" with plans to get as much as possible done.
