Attempts to resolve a flooding problem at Town Lake in Bailieborough are being hampered by the recent wet weather. A walkway, which was developed at considerable expense to Cavan County Council, is un-usable at present preventing access to a doctor's surgery, schools and a church. Bailieborough Municipal District Councillor Paddy McDonald has been monitoring the situation. He says basic investigations suggest the flooding is caused by an old stone culvert which may have broken during earlier improvement works.
Cavan County Council said the culvert in question requires "an extensive survey to determine both the route and condition" and they hope to do that work in 2024 during drier conditions.
Councillor McDonald told Northern Sound: "It is a priority. Clinton Mulligan, the local engineer, says he will take it up with the Office of Public Works to see if they can come up with a solution because it is a lovely amenity to have but the way it's flooding now people can't use it."
