Farmers protesting outside Aldi and Lidl supermarkets in Cavan town have ended their stance in the last hour. Food producers left Aldi at 1:30 this morning after management agreed to meet their demands.
In the last hour, Lidl management made a commitment to providing a fair price for their produce. In a statement to Northern Sound Aldi said it appreciated that farmers and suppliers will always seek to get the best possible deal.
IFA’s Ulster North Leinster Chairman, Frank Brady says the supermarkets have "acted in good faith". "We have stood down and the supermarkets have given a commitment that will give us what we are looking for.
"We are hoping that going forward that all farmers and food producers cannot be lost leaders. Once we get a margin, that is respect and we will give respect if we get it," he added.
