Further progress has been made in relation to the provision of a new Oncology Unit at Cavan General Hospital. Last October, Cavan-Monaghan TD, Brendan Smith received confirmation from the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, that this capital project would be considered for inclusion in the HSE's Capital Plan for 2023.
According to Deputy Smith, the next phase will be to move the project to the planning stage. Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Smith believes there is a need to progress this proposal in view of the inadequate accommodation facilities at present.
He added that people from across the region are "very fortunate" to have Oncology delivered at Cavan General Hospital from the Mater Hospital. A service that has been in place for more than 15 years, Deputy Smith praised that this service ensures that patients do not have to travel from Dublin.
Deputy Smith stated; "This is a welcome development and the delivery of oncology services at Cavan General Hospital is an extremely important service for large numbers of patients in Cavan/Monaghan and neighbouring areas. The present inadequate accommodation puts additional pressure on staff who work extremely hard in outdated accommodation."
