It's believed Mangan absconded due to being found in possession of a smartphone that allowed him to access the internet.

A prisoner who absconded from an open prison in Co Cavan has been described as a "volatile, violent, and dangerous criminal".

That's according to Stephen Breen, who is the Crime Editor with The Irish Sun.

John Mangan (53) has been in prison for over ten years on drug and firearm offences, and was within three years of completing his sentence.

He absconded from Loughan House on Monday night

Stephen Breen describes Loughan House as "relaxed" and says Mangan may have absconded due to being found in possession of a smartphone that allowed him to access the internet.

Speaking on The Joe Finnegan show, The Irish Sun's Crime Editor said Mangan possibly feared being moved to a "stricter" prison as a result of being found with the smartphone:
