The man extradited from Fermanagh to the Republic last month was wanted for a total of seven charges in Cavan and Monaghan, including assaulting two guards. Ciaran Cassidy, with an address in Roslea, appeared at Cavan District Court yesterday where he was sentenced to a total of eight months in prison. The 38-year-old appeared accused of assaulting two guards on Main Street, Ballyconnell just before Christmas in 2019.
He also faced aged charges dating back to 2011 and 2018 in the jurisdictions of both Cavan and Monaghan. Cassidy, of 25 Bruscarnagh Road, Roslea, stood accused of being drunk in a public place and engaging in abusive or threatening behaviour in Ballyconnell on 21st December 2019. Monaghan Gardaí wanted Cassidy on charges of being drunk in a public place, resisting arrest and failing to provide his name and address to gardaí in Latlurcan, Co. Monaghan on 10th July 2011. He was also wanted in Monaghan for resisting arrest at Monaghan Garda Station on 8th September 2018.
On 16th October, Northern Sound reported how the defendant was detained by virtue of an international warrant by officers from the International Policing Unit in Fermanagh. We then reported how he was extradited to the Republic 10 days later. Yesterday at Cavan District Court, Ciaran Cassidy was given five months imprisonment for assaulting a guard causing harm in Ballyconnell and three months for resisting arrest and using threatening and abusive language or behaviour in Latlurcan, with all other charges taken into consideration.
