A Cavan woman has been sentenced to a year in prison for assaulting a Garda.
Garda Rhona Bohan was brought to the ground, spat at, kicked and punched when she visited the home of 36 year old Marta Hopkins to carry out a bench warrant in September 2018.
Garda Bohan and a colleague called to the home of Ms Hopkins, who has an address at Tullybuck, Butlersbridge, while on mobile patrol.
After discussing the warrant, an agitated Hopkins left through the rear of the property and was followed by Garda Bohan, who was then assaulted.
Judge John Aylmer said it was a serious offence which saw a Garda "viciously attacked" while performing her duties, who has suffered lasting injuries as a result.
He noted that Ms Hopkins non-compliance with her medication at the time would appear to have been a factor.
Marta Hopkins was sentenced to three years in prison for the section three assault, with the final two suspended, if she agrees to be of good behaviour for two years and to co-operate with mental health and neurological services and complies with her medical prescriptions.
