A massive Treanor Clan gathering is taking place next year on Prince Edward Island and Treanors from across the globe, including Co Monaghan, will be in attendance. Many left these shores in search of a better life only to find themselves arriving on the great cobblestones of the Canadian island.
Northern Sound's Noel Murphy made a visit there recently; the purpose of his adventure was to find out more about the Treanor Clan and their many achievements on Prince Edward Island since the arrival of their ancestors almost 200 years ago.
Noel was greeted by Kevin B Treanor and Mary Lee Treanor both of whom are on the organising committee for the massive clan rally in 2024. He added that the island bears many similar place names, street names and buildings to what are now common place here in Co Monaghan.
"When the Treanors first arrived here, they would come into the harbour area, come out onto the cobblestone landing, which is still there, and looking straight ahead there was an amazing thing to be seen.
"There is a building on the top of the hill - the very famous Provence House where the accord to create Canada was signed years ago - and it looks like Monaghan Courthouse or the GPO. This was one of the first buildings that people arriving off the boat would see.
"And on the other side there is St Dunstan's Basilica and they would have gone in and prayed there, mostly in thanksgiving for having made it safely across the water," Noel said.
