The postponed Cavan/Monaghan Fine Gael convention will take place tonight. Minister Heather Humphreys announced her plans to step away from politics over the weekend leaving a sure Fine Gael seat in this constituency up for grabs. Earlier this week the Taoiseach said his party still planned to run two candidates and in recent days there has been speculation that there could even be three Fine Gael candidates in the region.
Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, T P O'Reilly was to run as a Cavan-based candidate alongside Humphreys a seasoned politician and the deputy leader of Fine Gael in the upcoming elections. Both Cllr David Maxwell and Senator Joe O’Reilly have confirmed to us that they have put their names forward. While Cllr Aidan Campbell is understood to have put his name forward but that has not been confirmed as of yet.
The convention has now been postponed two times and the make up of the Fine Gael candidates looks very much different than what most would have thought with Minister Humphreys bowing out of politics. The convention takes place at 8pm in the Hotel Kilmore at 8pm tonight.
