Kilnaleck native Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe received a posthumous award for his contribution to their communities through sport last week.
The Co Cavan man was one of two gardaí killed in the line of duty to receive a Cóiste Siamsa Sportstar award. The other was Roscommon Garda Tony Golden. Det Garda Adrian Donohoe was shot dead during a robbery at the Lordship Credit Union in January 2013.
While Garda Golden was killed in October 2015 as he accompanied a domestic violence victim to her home in Omeath. They were both remembered at the 28th Cóiste Siamsa Sportstar award ceremony that took place at the Farnham Estate Hotel and Resort in Cavan.
Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was posthumously for his involvement in and deep love of the GAA. Adrian was born in Cavan in 1972 and from an early age showed great interest and promise for GAA.
He represented his beloved Crosserlough Club at midfield position winning medals at various under age levels. His busiest and most successful period for Crosserlough fell within the years 1988 to 1991 where he held his midfield position to win the Cavan Minor Division One Championship two years in a row,
Adrian also represented St. Patrick’s College, Cavan, playing in all school teams with distinction, including the MacRory team. He also represented Cavan at minor and Under-21 levels, playing in both grades for two years. Adrian epitomised the very ethos of An Garda Síochána and what it means to be for and with the community, such attributes recognised and deeply appreciated by his local community who renamed their club playing grounds to “Adrian Donohoe Pairc” as a fitting tribute to his lasting legacy in this regard.
