"A refuge centre is needed in every county".
This is according to Deputy Pauline Tully who was speaking about the issue of domestic violence on today's Wider View.
The local TD was responding to the possibility of a new refuge centre for Cavan/Monaghan.
She highlighted how there are just 137 refuges in the State.
And, that according to Council of Europe, there should be 446 here.
There is a correlation, Deputy Tully added, between awareness campaigns on domestic violence and the increase in the number of people speaking out.
"Domestic violence is not just physical abuse," she continued.
"It can be financial, sexual; it can be coercive control.
"Women and men are recognising more what sort of abuse it is and they are reporting it in more numbers.
"I would encourage that but also we need to have more systems in place to deal with this situation."
