A proposal to bring a pop-up swimming pool to Carrickmacross has been approved by Monaghan County Council. According to Carickmacross councillor Colm Carthy, this forms part of a wider campaign to bring a leisure centre to south Monaghan.
At the September meeting of the Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District Council, Cllr Carthy called on the executive to support his call to bring Swim Ireland’s ‘Pop-up Pool’ to Carrick. Since the September MD meeting, Colm Carthy and executive staff from Monaghan County Council went to see the Swim Ireland pop-up pool, which is in Cootehill at this time.
A few days, later the Monaghan contingent also met with Swim Ireland, to discuss the logistics and process involved in bringing it to Carrickmacross. Right now, Monaghan County Council are working on finding the exact location for the pool and structure around it.
The pop-up pool will be in situ in Carrick for approximately six months and Colm Carthy said it will require significant investment to provide access to parking, water and electricity. "My council colleagues approved the proposal to go ahead seeking Swim Ireland to bring the pop-up pool to Carrickmacross so, it's good news for the town of Carrickmacross," Cllr Carthy told Northern Sound, "It'll be a temporary measure albeit," he continued, "the pop-up pool will only be in Carrickmacross for approximately six months but, I think in that period of time we will be able to provide a good amenity for the people of the local area."
