Polling stations have opened in the European and local elections across the country. Over 114,000 people can exercise their vote in the local elections across Cavan and Monaghan. While just over 107,000 across the Northern Sound region can have their say on who is elected to Europe to represent the Midlands North West constituency. Polling stations opened at 7am and will stay open until 10pm tonight. Voters will elect 14 MEPs and almost 1,000 councillors across the country.
Locally here in the Northern Sound region 73 candidates are vying for the 36 places that are available on both Cavan and Monaghan councils. 118 polling booths are open across 51 location in Monaghan, while there is 136 polling booths in 79 locations across Co Cavan. 21,410 people are eligible to vote in the Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District, 21,217 in the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District and 19,159 are eligible to vote in the local elections in the Cavan Belturbet Municipal District.
In Monaghan, Ballybay-Clones 15,264, Carrickmacross-Castleblayney 18,436 and in Monaghan Municipal District 19,207 can cast their votes in today's local election. 52,907 is the number in Monaghan that can vote in the European elections while 58,647 can have their say when it comes to voting for the 5 elected MEP's for the Midlands North West constituency. Many young people will be voting for the first time around and the Electoral Commission is urging Leaving Cert students to cast their ballot.
