Monaghan's Nuremore hotel was offered to IPAS as accommodation for asylum seekers to Ireland but, the offer was rejected. The information came from Monaghan-based TD Matt Carthy, who has been following developments at the luxury hotel since it fell into liquidation around 12 months ago.
Now, Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy, who grew up with the Nuremore on his doorstep near Carrickmacross wants the stately 4-star hotel "restored, re-opened and re-utilised" by local people and is calling for "political intervention" to make it happen. The Nuremore once hosted Jack's Army when the Ireland soccer team stayed there during R 'n' R.
Matt Carthy says the area has lost somewhere to host conferences, fundraising events like dinner dances and family events like funerals and first Holy Communion celebrations. "It means for any big event in the town there is a severe dearth of accommodation in the town, particularly hotel accommodation," the TD told the Wider View programme, "It's sore;ly lacking at the moment. It also means that for many large community events; dinner dances, charity events, voluntary organisations trying to pull together an event there is no location suitable."
