Plans well underway for "homecoming" of Saint Kilian relics

Dozens of local pilgrims and a delegation from Cavan County Council recently visited Würzburg.

This October, for the first time, the sacred relics of renowned 7th century Irish martyr Saint Kilian is set to return to his home county of Cavan from Würzburg in Germany.

This major religious and civic event has been described by the chairperson of the Relics Visitation Committee as very much a homecoming of the Mullagh native.

Dozens of local pilgrims and a delegation from Cavan County Council recently visited Würzburg in Germany for the annual two-week event in July called the Kiliani-Volksfest.

The major religious and civic event is being organised in partnership between the Diocese of Kilmore, the Parish of Mullagh, and Cavan County Council, and is to run from October 1st to October 6th.

It marks the first time the relics will have left Germany in 1,400 years. Chair of the Relics Visitation Committee, Cllr Shane P O'Reilly said not only is it the first time the relics of Saint Kilian has left Ireland but the first time that a relic of an Irish saint has returned from outside of the Ireland. He says it is going to very special occasion for people of faith or not faith to come together to celebrate the Mullagh man and all he has done.
