Cllr McCooey believes this funding marks a pivotal moment for the community.

The Cathaoirleach of the Castleblayney-Carrickmacross Municipal District has welcomed a major milestone in the redevelopment of the iconic Market House in Co Monaghan. The project has received a substantial grant of almost €11 million propelling forward the council's efforts to transform this historic landmark into a vibrant public facility that will serve as a hub for culture, retail, and office spaces. The Market House is one of 30 regeneration projects in rural towns and villages that has secured investment recently under the Government's Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

Councillor Aoife McCooey says this funding marks a pivotal moment for the community which will create new opportunities for economic growth and community engagement. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr McCooey explained; "I was delighted to see this project finally receive funding. Since I was elected in 2019 this has been a huge issue. Back in 2019, the roof had fallen in that year and 20 years of neglect was very much highlighted at that time and I've been working tirelessly to achieve this result today so I'm absolutely delighted about it."

Cllr McCooey continued; "The Market House redevelopment project encompasses comprehensive enhancements to the public realm, aimed at establishing a welcoming pedestrian-friendly gathering space. Combined with recent renovations at the Gate Lodge, this initiative will contribute to the realisation of a dynamic town square designed with people at its heart. When I was elected to Monaghan County Council, I was fully committed to restoring these assets to their former glory and ensuring they fulfil their potential as focal points of our community so I'm delighted that this substantial funding has been granted to Market House. Its redevelopment represents a tangible step forward in the ongoing revitalisation of Castleblayney, promising to enrich the lived experience of local people and visitors alike."
