Monaghan County Council has been given the go-ahead for the compulsory purchase of the former Lennard Arms Hotel in Clones.
An Bord Pleanála approved the plans which it's hoped will lead to its renovation and conversion.
Monaghan County Council hopes to convert the well-known building into a heritage and exhibition space.
It had applied to the planning board for permission to undertake a compulsory purchase order of the building and a number of houses adjoining it.
An Bord Pleanála has approved the plans.
Only one objection was submitted with the board, from Everyday Finance DAC, which said it was objecting on the grounds that it is the intention to appoint a receiver to it as soon as possible.
Funding allocated to the project so far only covers the costs of demolition and the next round of funding would cover the conservation of historical walls, replacement of windows, and the restoration of the original hotel front.
