Monaghan County Council has proposed plans to convert two well-known buildings into housing for Ukrainian refugees.
The plans were announced at a recent meeting of the Ballybay/Clones Municipal District.
The local authority plans to allocate the Ballybay Civic Centre and the former Ulster Bank building in Clones for occupancy by Ukrainian refugees.
While the Civic Centre in Ballybay is still currently used on a regular basis, Monaghan County Council intends to renovate the newly acquired Market House building for the purposes of becoming the permanent seat of democracy in the town, as well as the Ballybay Library.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Seamus Coyle believes that the Civic Centre should not go ahead as accommodation until renovations to the Market House "become reality."
Despite this, Cllr Coyle said he was "delighted" to see the development of the historical Market House. Adding this building has "enormous potential"
for the people of Ballybay and further afield.
