Aldi has lodged plans to open a new large-scale store in Monaghan town.
The German outlet has lodged plans for the construction of an 1,800sq m single storey food store at the town's Macartan Road junction and the Glen Road. The plans form part of the retail firm's continued expansion nationwide and follows planning approval for a €6.5m store in Cootehill in recent months.
If given the green light by Monaghan County Council, the plans would allow for 90 car parking spaces. This isn't the first time the international grocery store have applied to Monaghan County Council for a presence in Monaghan Town.
Aldi has been trying to establish an outlet in the county town for a number of years at the site known as McNally's car park. Flood remediation and flood relief works outside the Aldi site boundary led to those plans being unsuccessful.A spokesperson for ALDI Ireland confirmed to Northern Sound that ALDI has resubmitted a planning application for our new store in Monaghan Town. They added by saying they remain committed to constructing and opening a new store in Monaghan to bring our unbeatable value to the local community as soon as possible.
20 full time jobs would be created by the store opening in the town with county planners expected to make a decision on the application by early July.
