Cavan County Council is to explore plans to seek out bathing areas that will be monitored by lifeguards during the swimming season.
The motion was raised by Councillor Aiden Fitzpatrick in response to a tragic week in July in which nine people on the island died in swimming related incidents, including three in the Northern Sound region.
His motion calls for one area in each MD to be supervised by a lifeguard during the swimming season, which runs from June to September.
Funding for the lifeguard would come from Cavan County Council, but the Fianna Fáil councillor says he confident a funding stream can be secured.
