Planning permission for 76 new houses in Kingscourt has been refused by An Bórd Pleanála.
The higher planning authority cited the development could have a serious impact on the water network in the area
Destrina Limited initially applied to Cavan County Council to construct the houses in Dún na Carraige in Kingscourt.
Permission was granted by county planners subject to 31 conditions. However an appeal was then lodged by residents of the Dún na Carraige estate citing concerns over a lack of parking space and the construction of a temporary wastewater treatment plant on site. Other issues raised included the safe passage of construction traffic through the estate and the reversing of a potential 16 cars onto an 80kph stretch of road. After consideration, An Bórd Pleanála recommended to overturn the council's decision and refuse planning permission. They stated that the current Kingscourt Water Plant is at capacity and, with no timeline for upgrade works, granting permission would be prejudicial to public health. The higher authority also outlined that they were not satisfied the developers had obtained permission from Uisce Éireann to connect the temporary wastewater plant to the sewer network.
This raised further concerns about the long term maintenance of the plant, leading the authority to overturn the granted planning permission]
