Planning has been approved to carry out long awaited works at the Dunancory Bridge outside Virginia.
At a meeting of the Ballyjamesduff MD, Councillors heard that following public consultation and correspondence with TII and Inland Fisheries, work can now commence.
The Dunancory Bridge is on the main road between Virginia and Ballyjamesduff and the Part 8 application will see rehabilitation and stonework carried out, as well as widening it to allow for better access by pedestrians and vehicles.
In proposing that the Council approve the upgrades, Councillor TP O’Reilly said the road sees more heavy goods traffic than the N3, with it being used by lorries travelling from Ballyjamesduff and Granard.
The Council chamber also heard that a former councillor in the area described the bridge as the worst stretch of road between Ballyjamesduff and Moscow.
