Plans for a major extension to Virginia College has been given the green light.
Cavan County Council have approved plans submitted by Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board to carry out a three-storey extension to the local secondary school.
The plans provide for a new four classroom Special Educational Needs facility alongside ancillary accommodation, as well as 11 new general classrooms, speciality classrooms and general offices. The approved plans will also include the refurbishment and extension of the existing school's sports hall. The new extension will be linked to the existing post-primary school and cover a total area of 4,538m².
County planners gave the go-ahead this week with 27 conditions attached, Local councillor TP O'Reilly says this planning approval is about future proofing the local school in the area.
Meanwhile, Cllr Shane P O'Reilly a former member of the board of management and a leading member of CMETB for many years and currently has 3 children attending the College, says that today's decision is a case of remembering the past but ensuring the future of the facility, 'it's going from strength to strength and needs the most modern and up to date facility for our students'.
