A plan has been put in place by Monaghan County Council to reopen a road in the Derrygooney area of Latton after a bridge collapsed last week. The road - which was closed for five months last year to accommodate rehabilitation works on the structure - is used by local motorists who have now become frustrated over this latest development.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Sean Gilliland - who raised the matter with the local authority on Monday - said the new plan will allow for works to be carried out on the bridge while keeping the road open.
He says the local culvert will be piped temporarily over the coming days and the bridge structure on the opposite side of the road will be reconstructed thereafter. He added that once the road is reopened the 'inconvenience' will be removed from local people and members of the farming community living in the area.
"It just wasn't right to ask the people in the area to detour and the inconvenience of it after the road was closed for so long last year. This also gives us time to conduct an investigation so that we can find out what happened. Once we know that, we can ensure that it doesn't happen again," said Cllr Gilliland.
