Tributes are being paid to Cavan GAA stalwart PJ Carroll.
The Cavan Gaels clubman and former manager of Cavan, Leitrim, and Sligo passed away this week. In a long career in the GAA, he also served as PRO of the Cavan County Board and worked with the Anglo Celt newspaper. PJ was part of the first Cavan Gaels Team to win the Cavan senior championship in 1965, with further successes in 1975 and 1977. During his tenure with Leitrim, he brought them from Division 3 North to Division 1 and is credited with playing a large part in their Connaught title in 1994. Sean McMahon is a former senior journalist with the Anglo Celt who worked closely with PJ. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, he described him as a special person who had a deep love for the GAA and it's people.
"His attention to detail both at work and as a manager was something that would signal him as special, because of his preparation and checking on the background of players, who they played for, how they played, their skills. He would immediately be able to identify any player and he'd probably tell you who in the family was playing and if his father played. He had a fascination with Gaelic Games and an insight long before his time. He was one of the more modern managers because he had an interest in the players and how they got on".
